Personal Description:
Hi, I'm Chris! I'm a university-educated piano/keyboards tutor of 10 years experience, living in Putney, SW London. I primarily teach pop, as well as classical and jazz.
I'm Scottish, have been playing piano since I was 6, and now I'm a busy gigging musician playing in countless live bands - in my spare time I'm studying to become a classical concert pianist. I've played festivals to thousands of people, recorded at Abbey Road Studios and worked with many reputable names in the music industry.
Tutoring Experience:
Over my career I've taught privately, and with the Yamaha Music School since 2012; I've put literally hundreds of students through exams, with excellent results. I'm professionally trained to teach individual and group classes having attended multiple training seminars about the modern Yamaha teaching technique developed in Japan.
Tutoring Approach:
My lessons are fun and engaging, and very much tailored to the individual student. I accept students both serious and casual, although the best results will only be attained with dedicated daily practice. We will work on technique, curriculum pieces, reading, aural, improvising, theory and more. The curriculum is not strict and can be student-led, providing we pick suitable arrangements at the right level.
The way I've learned music all my life is the way I teach it: the way I learned from Yamaha Music Schools is to teach one to hear, play, read, and write music - in that order. It's the same way we learn to speak! The classical, old fashioned way is the reverse order (some of you may have experience with this!) - their way produces good sight-readers; our modern approach cultivates great musicians.
