Personal Description:
Since graduating from York University with a First Class Honours Degree, I have been working as a performing musician and drum / piano teacher in North London (West Hampstead) for the last ten years. I absolutely love both instruments and have been playing for the last 20 years, picking up experience in a variety of performance situations. As well as playing with a successful pop/rock band (The King's Parade) that have played at O2 Academies around the country, I led a 30 piece samba band (Samba York) for two years and have played in Big Bands (the National Youth Jazz Orchestra) and a number of orchestral bands. I am friendly and relaxed, and make an effort to be as flexible as possible when it comes to arranging lesson times.
Tutoring Experience:
I've been giving priva**Contact Detail Removed**ssons on drum-kit and piano in and out of schools for the last ten years and have taught all genres of music to students ranging from total beginners to an advanced level. I have good experience teaching a variety of ages (from 5 to 72), and have taken several students from complete beginners to Grade 8 and beyond. Prior to this, I worked as a full-time drum and piano teacher at the Unwind Music Centre in Chennai, India, where I created a new drum syllabus for the Centre and put this into practice over a 6 month period. I've also worked as a private drum teacher and a band mentor on the Camp America programme in the USA.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to give fun, structured lessons based on helping my students achieve their personal goals, whether this be simply improving their general musicianship or working through grades (Trinity / Rockschool / ABRSM - grades 1-8) at all levels. As well as looking at technique and sight reading, I like to get my students working to music/ backing tracks because I believe that this is one of the most enjoyable and effective ways of learning. I've also found that this method proves very successful in preparing my students for live playing situations.
