Personal Description:

I am a professional performing and teaching musician, passionate about developing creativity and confidence in musical learners of all ages and abilities. I currently teach violin for music services, as well as coaching chamber music and directing a string ensemble at Primary Royal Academy of Music. I am DBS checked and have undertaken safeguarding training and I have over 25 years experience of instrumental and theory teaching. I trained as a performer at Trinity College of Music, and was a violinist in the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for 14 years. Since then, I have qualified as a secondary music teacher, and am experienced at working with young people with Special Educational Needs as well as with Gifted & Talented students.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been an instrumental teacher for over 25 years since leaving music college, working for Oakham School for many years as a visiting violin teacher, as well as teaching privately at home, and more recently undertaking work for music services, teaching individual, group and whole-class lessons. I love sharing my passion for playing string instruments, and for developing creativity through different styles of musical learning. I have also taught music in a wide variety of schools settings, from classroom instrumental to A level composition!

Tutoring Approach:

I am equally at home teaching beginners to engage with a violin or viola for the first time, as I am coaching diploma level violinists, or in supporting GCSE and A level performance papers. I am an experienced teacher of music theory, whether learners wish to pass grade 5 to carry on to higher instrumental grades, or to pursue higher grade theory to support their curricular GCSE or A level work (I am currently an A level examiner). I can tutor diploma paperwork and viva preparation as well as preparing the instrumental recital. Above all, I believe it is important for music to make a difference to the learner's confidence and creativity, as well as developing musical expertise.
