Personal Description:
I trained as a flautist at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under the tuition of Edward Beckett and Philippa Davies. Following Post Graduate studies in Performance and Communication Skills, I have worked as both a freelance performer in solo, chamber music and orchestral work, and in music education as a teacher, workshop leader and animateur for many years - I can't imagine a life that isn't full of music!
The thread that weaves through all my work is the desire to unlock for others the joy, exhilaration and connection that I experience in music-making myself and to share it as widely as I can. I have found that through music we can open up a whole other world of meaningfulness, expression and absorption to complement and enhance all other everyday endeavours. I've found my own ongoing attention to mastery of my instrument supports my wellbeing and confidence in all other areas of my life, and I see that happening for all those I work with, too. Teaching music is a process that I love!
Tutoring Experience:
I am an experienced teacher with students of all ages and stages, in school settings, in private tuition and as a mentor and coach for young professional musicians at the start of their careers. I've been encouraging others to learn wherever there was an opportunity to do so, ever since I was in school myself.
I have a long track record of excellent exam results from the earliest grades to advanced diplomas, and the individual growth of my students in terms of their confidence, communication and creative expression is at least as important to me as any exam result.
Tutoring Approach:
I offer a warm and encouraging individual approach to all my students, nurturing in them a love of music and flute playing that will last a lifetime.
The parent of one of my existing students might speak for me here, about what they experience of my approach:
"Caroline meets her students where they are and works passionately to enable them to reach their full potential. Her approach is meticulous in its attention to technical detail but also holistic and insightful in her relationship to the student, helping them to understand and meet their individual challenges. She inspires and motivates in a way that allows joy and progress to work hand in hand." (2023)
