Personal Description:
I am an experienced composer, pianist, singer and teacher. After studying Music at University (York) I worked variously in Music Publishing, Music and Arts Journalism as a TV Researcher and as a Piano Teacher and Kodaly Trained Music Teacher with young children. For a year I lived in South West France in the Languedoc near Montpellier with my family where I taught piano and wrote articles. I have written music for Education - particularly choral and music theatre works and more recently, while completing an MMus in Composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, works for orchestra, varied instrumental ensembles, choirs, solo voice and an opera that was premiered at the Riverside Studios in London at the Tete a Tete Festival in 2011. I have had a number of commissions recently with performances at The Forge in Camden in January 2013 and at community festival in Camden in June 2013 and a new piece for violin in 2016 in Kentish Town and new music for christmas performed in December 2017 at a choral concert in Kentish Town. I am currently working on a chamber opera for children. For my piano teaching I am currently working mostly with young adults who want to learn the piano and do theory as well and not so much with child beginners.
Tutoring Experience:
I am a qualified piano teacher (LTCL) with a PGCE from the Institute of Education in London in Secondary Music Teaching. I have taught the piano privately for many years, worked as a junior school Music Specialist and taught Colourstrings and Kodaly based musicianship classes for young children. For the past 13 years I have taught A level Music and BTEC courses at an FE college in Richmond upon Thames as well as tutoring in Music Theory and Composition. I am now also employed as a Teaching and Learning Advocate, supporting a wide range of teachers and running training sessions. I continue to feel passionately about education and find the process of teaching, training and finding the best way to help students learn, a challenging and rewarding experience.
Tutoring Approach:
I tutor in a similar way to teaching in a college. I begin by identifying the students' knowledge and way of working and then offer advice based on a well practised approach to teaching different facets of the Music courses I teach. I teach from my home music studio in Kentish Town with access to piano, books and scores as well as specialist music software including Sibelius and Logic as well as internet resources. I generally expect to teach 1 hour or longer sessions for tutoring A level or higher level music.
