Personal Description:

I am 20 years old and a 2nd Year Student studying Music BA at the University of York. I have achieved grade 8 distinction in piano and am currently working towards my ABRSM diploma qualification. I have held a couple of private recitals for friends and the public under different groups and piano teachers. I have also accompanied for musicians at the University too. Music is something I adore and I feel as though teaching young children/beginners to nurture their already growing passion is a wonderful use for life in this world.

Tutoring Experience:

I was an aupair in France during my gap year and taught two young girls both piano from a beginners level as well as aiding them in musical shaping with their respective instruments. I'd write pieces which contained techniques they had practiced in their exercises and we'd play altogether for enjoyment. I have also taught a couple of my peers pieces and songs they have liked. I'm still a novice teacher though and have much to learn. The opportunity to gain more experience would be invaluable.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to musical teaching is nurturing both technique and musicality. With beginners, I like to go through the basics such as knowing where the notes are on the piano, encouraging small exercises that allow the pupil to get used to playing with hands together. I then go on to teach reading sheet music, starting with the treble clef in right left hand then the bass clef in the right. I then move onto scales and fingering, starting with C and slowing moving up the circle of fifths in order to incorporate the reading of key signatures from early on. The pace however depends on how the student is getting on.

For more experienced players who are grade 1 or up, technique will be determined on what each grade requires as well as techniques for effective practice. We will also look at musical phrasing and articulation so that the pupil understands not only how to play the notes of the piece, but to play the piece in all its musical expression and beauty. In terms of exams, we would be studying the ABRSM grades.
