Personal Description:

I am a 23 year old woman doing her Mmus Composition degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I’ve got a BA (hons) in Music from the University of York and I have had 5 years of piano tuition experience. My approach to music is to encourage and prioritise the enjoyment that can be taken from it - preserving its essential purpose of connection and beauty.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been a private tutor for 5 years. I have taught mostly beginners, both adults and children, and have managed to instil a love for piano and musical learning. You are never too old to start! I have done recital preparation for levels up to grade 4, and only teach towards exams if that is what the student desires.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to musical teaching is nurturing both technique and musicality. With beginners, I like to go through the basics such as knowing where the notes are on the piano, encouraging small exercises that allow the pupil to get used to playing with hands together. I then go on to teach reading sheet music, starting with the treble clef in right left hand then the bass clef in the right. I then move onto scales and fingering, starting with C and slowing moving up the circle of fifths in order to incorporate the reading of key signatures from early on. The pace however depends on how the student is getting on.

For more experienced players who are grade 1 or up, technique will be determined on what each grade requires as well as techniques for effective practice. We will also look at musical phrasing and articulation so that the pupil understands not only how to play the notes of the piece, but to play the piece in all its musical expression and beauty. In terms of exams, we would be studying the ABRSM grades.
