Caitlin offers a FREE first / introductory lesson!
After several years teaching Physics and then being a full time Mum and homeschooler I have returned to my musical roots, and since 2012 I have been teaching both piano and cello, as well as occasional accompanying work.
I teach in person and also online.
I have taught from beginner level to grade 8, and also have experience of teaching the basics of rhythm and pitch using the Kodaly method. I am a member of Curious Piano Teachers and through the resources of this community I am continually honing my teaching skills. I am also a member of EPTA (European Piano Teachers Association)
Some comments from pupils past and present:
It is totally inspiring how you help me not just play the notes but interpret the music and bring out the musician that lies in our depths. Your teaching is patient and very thorough !!!
You helped me to set manageable goals so I knew exactly what was expected. You had such a wide range of resources and knowledge which meant that you always had more exercises or ideas on how to tackle tricky bits if the first way didn’t work. It's so clear that you enjoy teaching and that enthusiasm definitely inspired me. After lessons with you I just wanted to stop everything and practice the piano.
(Grade 8 student)
You motivated me to improve my technique, not just for its own sake but in order to improve the quality of my playing. I particularly found your approach to practicing scales helpful, an area that I had never really enjoyed with other piano teachers! When I struggled with sight singing you did your best to teach in creative ways that worked best for me. Knowing that you played to such a high standard yourself, led to me being spurred along by a healthy level of challenge! You taught me to think independently about pieces so that when I left home I had helpful tools and an appreciation for playing the piano that remain despite having finished formal piano lessons.
(Grade 8 student)
Caitlin is an excellent tutor, very approachable and reliable. She has an obvious passion for music that she tries to pass on to those she teaches. She teaches my two children piano, one is just about to take grade 4 piano exam, and the younger one has recently passed grade 1 with an outstanding score. I would highly recommend Caitlin as a piano tutor.
As a classical player I emphasise developing a sound technique, efficient practice skills and musical expression. I encourage my students to aim for a high standard, and that everyone can experience success by setting appropriate targets. I tailor my approach to the individual, depending on their degree of natural talent, the amount of time they are committed to spend practising, and what helps most to motivate them. I am happy to prepare students for ABRSM or Trinity exams, but I don't consider exams as an end in themselves. I try to be as encouraging as possible and to praise all progress, however small.
I enter my pupils for music festivals where appropriate and put on informal concerts twice a year, when pupils have the opportunity to play duets and trios with each other. This encourages ensemble skills and also fosters a sense of community among my young pianists.
