I am self-taught from age 17 and was later professionally tutored by Joe Hubbard for four years during the early 1990s. I am experienced in various playing styles, including pop, pop/rock, country, folk, soul, ceilidh and originals projects and have played 900+ gigs to date. I commissioned two hand-built 6-string bass guitars (fretted and fretless) during the early 1990s, and these remain my principal instruments. Due to other life circumstances, I have not taught for over ten years but, following my relocation to the East Midlands, I have a lot more time available for music and am keen to expand both my performing and teaching activities. I am a member of both the Musicians Union and the Registry of Guitar Tutors.
Group: children’s music workshops, ranging from one-off sessions of music-based activities at holiday clubs to fully-funded songwriting and recording projects.
One-to-one: private tuition, including basic technique, scales/arpeggios, rhythm notation and instrument knowledge. Coaching for bass guitar grade exams.
My preferred approach is on a one-to-one basis in the student's own home or at school/college, with the main emphasis on the general basics of bass guitar playing and how they relate to the real world of music. I make a point of determining the student's own musical influences and preferences and I take an interest in their ideas and ambitions. I offer a half-price, no obligation introductory lesson.
