Personal Description:
I began playing the saxophone and clarinet in grammar school, the flute followed at university. Since then I have performed and taught music throughout Europe, the USA and India. In 2001 I earned a Ph.D. in musicology and have since become the founding chairperson of the World Music Committee of the National Flute Association. I am the author of the book "The Flute in Jazz" and producer of the documentary film of the same name. I continue to perform jazz with my own quartet and am a member of the Ormskirk Symphony Orchestra
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught music at the college level, as a university lecturer in musicology and music history, in schools, as a band and orchestra teacher in middle and high schools, and as a private instructor in woodwinds for over 30 years, in both the UK and the USA.
Tutoring Approach:
As a music teacher I like to have an influence from the very beginning, whenever possible, from the selection of the instrument for the student, to the development of goals and the subsequent definition of the best course of study. Often, students have no idea what they are trying to accomplish and have barely heard the various genres their instrument are suited for. The fundamental skills are the same for all purposes, but very soon in the learning process, the approach may change if the student is aiming at classical music reading and interpretation, or jazz and popular styles where playing by ear is more valued. I always seek to find the right emphasis for the student, based on a good command of basic skills. Above all, this is hard work, but it should also be fun.
