Personal Description:
I am available for Skype / Zoom online teaching as well as face-to face lessons as Covid Restrictions allow.
Beginners to Advanced of all ages.
Following a long and varied professional playing career in London, where I was lucky enough to enjoy a 12 year West End residency as guitarist on the Olivier Award winning show Wicked (Victoria Apollo), I have returned to Scotland to be closer to family and to focus on music education projects, many of which were inspired by my own children.
I have had a long association with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), being a regular guest principal on electric, acoustic, nylon guitar and banjo while my freelance performance career has ranged from playing twin lead with Brian May, playing for the TV show X-factor and accompanying Renée Flemming on Classical Guitar at the Royal Festival Hall.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught music both privately and in school settings for over 20 years. As well as regular private pupils and one-off masterclasses my recent teaching experiences included working as a youth mentor for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) for their schools outreach programmes and their Project Remix at Symphony Hall. I have also mentored developing professionals through my involvement with the London Musical Theatre Orchestra. I was guitar tutor to the cast of the world tour of Mamma Mia, teaching actors new to the instrument to play with confidence in front of an audience of 4,500. I am also artistic director of the music education project jazz-A-nory which teaches listening and improvisation skills to primary age children through a combination of music performance and storytelling.
Tutoring Approach:
Lessons are friendly and relaxed, focusing on establishing a secure technique but also on developing general musicianship and a strong ear. It is my firm belief that all musicians can and should improvise, play by ear and also read music: each of these skills encourages and improves the other and can bring confidence to all aspects of musical performance, from rock soloing to jazz-bar jam sessions to playing with a large orchestra.
