I am a professional musician with piano 35 years' of bass-playing experience in live and recording venues, and more than 40 years of classical (to Grade 8) and rock piano. I work in music and the arts full-time, and have played as a part- and full-time session musician.
I am a recent graduate of the Royal College of Music, and a member of the RCM Teaching Service. I can teach informally as well as to RSL and Trinity syllabuses.
I have been teaching privately since 2005, using both structured and casual learning frameworks and helping students with a wide range of objectives. I have used both formal, skills and goal-driven approaches and supported students with an informal but heartfelt desire to learn how to play. I teach both electric bass and piano, and specialise in teaching adult learners and late beginners. As well as teaching at home and depending on the location at the student's home, I have significant experience in using video technology and virtual learning environments to help create a realistic and online teaching experience.
My approach is guided by the student's desires and objectives. I can accommodate their needs with a structured, formal lesson plan with regular goal-setting or adopting a more fluid, student-driven attitude - and anywhere in between. Before the first lesson, we would ideally talk to understand what it is the student wants to get out of tuition; what formal or informal goals they wish to meet; which syllabus they wish to follow, or might be best suited to; and how they maintain that level of proficiency, once obtained.
