Personal Description:

I have been teaching violin and viola for more than 25 years. I am a member of the European String Teachers Association and do regular vocational training with them and with other organisations. I play both violin and viola professionally and in amateur groups, in orchestras, small ensembles and for a variety of types of music and to accompany dancers. I have a DBS equivalent certificate issued in Scotland where I lived previously and am currently waiting for my new DBS to arrive.

Tutoring Experience:

I teach individuals and small groups. My students have ranged in age from 6 to 89 and played at all levels from beginner to advanced. I have experience of helping students do well in exams and performances, and have also taught students who want to play purely for pleasure, and take the learning in less conventional directions.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching practice is mainly with young students and I believe strongly that musical learning at a young age gives lifelong benefits. I also see with my older students that learning the violin and viola can be rewarding at any age and level. Each student or group is treated individually, with approaches varying from working through exams to studying orchestral music to improvisation and learning by ear. I work closely with students and families to understand their motivation and aims. I tailor methods and material to suit individual students. I have some student instruments for hire in the early stages before you have decided to commit to buying one. There is no requirement to come from a musical background: all that's needed is an interest in playing the instrument and the motivation to work at it.
