Personal Description:

My name is Alicia and I am a flute teacher based in East London. I like to think I have excellent communication skills and work well with people, while constantly thriving to work to the highest possible standard. My hobbies and passions include running, playing the flute and producing electronic music.

In recent years, I completed 6 years of studying music as a specialist musician at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset. My greatest achievements in life so far have been being gaining a place at one of the London music colleges, achieving my grade 8 with distinction at the age of 12, and winning the Two Moors Festival Young Musicians' Competition in 2016. I am now in my final year at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, one of the London music colleges, with a scholarship from the Royal Naval Greenwich Hospital Fund and am very proud to have won the Trinity Laban Flute Cup in 2019. I have been lucky enough to have studied with a number of professional flautists which I have looked up to for years, such as Susan Milan, Lisa Nelsen, and currently Fiona Kelly. I have also attended masterclasses lead by some of the best in the industry such as Sir James Galway, William Bennett OBE, Kate Hill, Michael Cox and Emily Beynon.

My flute has taken me around the UK and I have performed in various venues such as The Anvil in Basingstoke, the Chapel at the Old Royal Naval College, Powderham Castle, Blackheath Halls, Exeter Cathedral and Wells Cathedral.

Tutoring Experience:

In recent years, I have discovered the rewarding nature of teaching by taking on several students privately, and am looking to develop my skills. Since teaching my first student 3 years ago, I noticed how much joy it bought me encouraging them and helping them to reach their own personal goals. I have taken part in the leadership of various Primary School workshops such as at Deptford Green School and Charlotte Sharman Primary School. I have had around 2 years of private teaching experience to mostly younger children, but I am keen to take on flautists of any level to teach what I have learned over the years and learn from my students to gain a better understanding of the art of teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

As a teacher, I am friendly, confident and commit 100% to my students. I provide structured, engaging and most importantly, individually-tailored lessons that will suit the needs of each flautist. I will work within the requirements of the ABRSM and Trinity grade systems depending on which stage they are at with their flute playing, with a focus on technique, repertoire, performance skills and music theory. I am willing to take on flautists of any level and hope to learn from my students to gain a better understanding of the art of teaching.

I can teach the flute, music theory and academic music (GCSE and A level standard), either separately or alongside each other.

The first lessons will be largely getting to know the students' reasons behind wanting to learn and what they want to get out of it. Once this is established, each lesson will be personalised and structured around the needs of the student. I will also lend music books to my students where necessary in which I will set pieces and studies for the student to practice from for a range of levels (beginner to intermediate).

What they will learn:

BEGINNERS -
- How to read music
- Fingering and Embouchure
