Personal Description:

I'm a multi-instrumentalist with a life-long addiction to learning and playing musical instruments. If you've learned more than one instrument, you'll know it's really true - it gets easier. County-level orchestral playing and a variety of folk bands were the main musical outlets in my youth, along with piano accompanying and church music (organ) where it all began for me. These days I lead a church worship group (no, we don't sound like a 50s skiffle group) , and compose and occasional record piano-based songs. Teaching others music connects me with my own dear teachers, to whom I owe a massive debt for the decades of joy they've given me.

Tutoring Experience:

I've been teaching music informally and formally since I was in my teens.

Tutoring Approach:

Playing a musical instrument is more learning to play tennis, say, than learning to speak a new language. It's about learning "new moves". It makes a huge difference how you sit/stand, for example (depending on the instrument in question), and I place a lot of emphasis on helping students avoid the strains and pains that inevitably come from learning "bad habits" early on. By focusing on learning the right patterns of movement from the start, it's remarkable how fast one can progress. I teach self-patience, a playful approach, a love of making a beautiful sound, and the value of "perfect practice".
