Personal Description:

Online Music Lessons with you at the focus from the comfort of your own home!

I am a Level 4 CET (Certificate in Education & Training) qualified tutor specialising in the follow subjects and cater to all ages:
- Piano & Keyboard
- Music-making/Composition
- Music Production
- Music Theory

My name is Alex and I have been running AJL Music Tuition since 2017. I am passionate about music, which has developed further over the last few years through the creation and production of my own music, tracks and collaborations with musicians. I have an in-depth knowledge of composing music using technology and various applications.

I studied an undergraduate degree in Creative Music Technology, then progressed to successfully gain a master’s degree in Music Composition, graduating with a Distinction.
Throughout each of these degrees, I developed and mastered the different tools available for music production, learning the theoretical and contextual basis of these and putting them into practice. I obtained an Ableton Prize at Level 7 for the best digital compositional work for my Compositional Portfolio.

As a music producer (under the moniker Alex JL), my compositions have been supported on BBC Radio, as well as having my music placed on BBC shows such as DIY SOS, Deadstock and BBC Bitesize Videos. I have extensive experience releasing music, both through independent record labels and by myself, collaborating with vocalists and songwriters; creating, recording and producing their music for release, as well as working on mixing and mastering for clients.

I am proficient in both Ableton Live and Logic Pro, specialising in electronic, dance and urban music but I’m able to teach almost any genre – the fundamental techniques are applicable to all styles.

I am also an accomplished piano player, who tutors beginners and intermediates privately to improve their piano playing, alongside their theoretical understanding of music.

Tutoring Experience:

I established myself as a private tutor in 2017. I have been working with students on a one-to-one basis from beginner to intermedia**Contact Detail Removed**vels and of all ages. I am continually running group workshops and music appreciation lectures covering various areas of the music spectrum from music composition and technology to music history and analysis.

Since completing my master's degree, I have performed a number of guest lectures at the University of Surrey, exploring various processes and techniques I have developed for live digital improvisation and composition. I have also given presentations and seminars, exploring the research I have conducted into the basics of generative music systems, my music processes and compositional techniques.

I am now mentoring and teaching students on a one-to-one basis, helping them reach their goals covering subjects including piano and keyboard, music theory and introducing the possibilities available in music technology and composition.
I am a WEA tutor, creating, planning and delivering targeted courses in music and emotional health, to enable students to improve their skills and mental state through practical work.
I am also working with groups of children aged from 7-13, building their foundations within music technology and composition in order to create and produce their own musical compositions.

I have taught children from the age of 5 upwards, currently with a number of one-to-one sessions and small group lessons. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and abilities, taking pride in seeing their progress and them reaching their goals.

I am fully enhanced DBS certified.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is to use a combination of context, theory, examples, practical and performance. These five all become interlinked in that the examples provide context to the theory and practical work, the practice improves performance and understanding of theory. It would then be fair to say that the you should feel empowered and enabled to do something new.

I have developed specialised courses in Piano and Music Production & Composition, where I tailor the taught content to your musical interests, goals and level.

My guarantee to you as your tutor, I will act as your mentor, instilling belief in your ability and help you to work through any difficulties that you may encounter during your musical journey. I am enthusiastic about music learning and I want to inspire you to learn and reach your full capabilities.

On your first lesson, I aim to gain an insight into your goals and motivations and how best you learn. This will inform my approach to planning and delivery of your lessons and from the beginning, I will ensure you leave with something to play, practice or work on.
