Information About Adam - Norwich teacher

Personal Description:

I'm a Norwich-based teacher of flatpicking and fingerstyle guitar in folk, bluegrass, swing, blues, acoustic, rock and pop, plus clawhammer and Scruggs style banjo. I have been playing for 40 years, gigging for 35 and teaching for 15 years. I have played in many bands and ensembles as well as a solo performer. I have always enjoyed playing lots of different genres of music from classical to rock, though these days I mainly play acoustically with a focus on folk and bluegrass. My favourite guitarists include Peter Green, BB King, Duck Baker, Norman Blake, Django Reinhardt and Michael Daves. I sight read, play by ear and improvise. I also play and teach banjo and play the anglo-concertina.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught adults and children privately over many years, and always enjoy helping people to find their own path in music. I also have training and lead workshops and participatory music in community settings, such as SEND schools and residential care.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is definitely informed by the idea that it's about 'starting fires not filling buckets' - meaning that I find that we learn best when we are excited and motivated to play. I don't follow a set curriculum, but tend to support pupils to identify their own learning goals, such as particular pieces, or learning a particular style. Once we have those goals, we can use lessons to break down what skills and knowledge are needed so that you can practice effectively and become the player you want to be. I can teach you to read, compose and to improvise.
