I have been playing drums since the age of 12, guitar since 7, and my mother and grandparents have influenced me musically more than anyone. I worked up the courage to start playing in my church's worship team at the age of 14, and now I am a worship co-ordinator at my church, and have played at various other churches in my area. I try not to stay stuck in my ways when it comes to what music I listen to, what music I play and how I teach. I feel that this only limits me and my students.
I have been teaching for two years now and have taught students between the ages of 8 and 63. I have taught at an Academy of Music as a substitute teacher which really broadened my views on teaching music. I prefer teaching privately though because I really get to connect with the student on a musical level and a personal level.
I have yet to define a set sylabus that I teach from, and I prefer adjusting my teaching approach depending on my student and his/her needs. I love seeing people grow musically and being a part of that growth. I feel that because I am still young, I can relate to many kids with a passion for music. And I try moulding my lessons around the students level of passion and dedication. I believe that the only way I can really teach a person to play music, is if I teach them to teach themselves, so that they don't become parrots and therefore have less freedom on their instrument.
