Information About Siyabonga - Andriesvale tutor

Personal Description:

I am currently a PhD student in mathematics, I did my masters in Category Theory and Topology at African Institute for Mathematical Sciences and University of the Western Cape in one 10 months. I started tutoring maths in my second year at university, I have also tutored final year and honours courses in mathematics. I became the youngest research assistant in July 2021 at UWC. I love pure mathematics, and knowing how and why things work.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught and tutored different pure maths courses since 2018, when I was a research assistant, I also took a role in setting up exams for first year maths course in Calculus.

Tutoring Approach:

My focus is on having a strong understanding of the fundamental concepts, to achieve this, I try to explain these concepts to the simplest versions ( sometimes using non mathematical examples). Then, I provide simple exercises sheet so that the student gets a feeling of what is happening. Once they understand the basics, I put more emphasis on building using the basics. To understand the hard concepts, the student needs to be very good and breaking down problems into simpler ideas that are familiar to them. Of course, more time is needed at that stage so I let the student first try out the problems and then work together on them. Pattern recognition is important when doing mathematics so that different techniques can be used appropriately.
