Information About Oliver - Constantia tutor

Personal Description:

I have grown up with the question 'Why?', why does a phone work, why does the moon wax and wane, why does the quadratic formula work. And when my parents and teachers could not answer, I would do my best to find the answer by working it out myself or through research.
Besides enjoying maths and science in their pure form, I enjoy applying them to programming, robotics and mechanical design. Beyond STEM, my other passions include art with various mediums, challenging myself physically and mentally through parkour/freerunning and advocating veganism to make the world a more compassionate place.

I matriculated in 2020 top of my class with 6 distinctions, notably 99% for mathematics, 97% for Information technology and 92% for physical science. I have enjoyed participating in the UCT maths olympiads as well as 1 computer olympiad. I plan on studying Physics and Mathematics at UCT from 2022.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been helping peers in my class (and sometimes outside) with maths and science from primary school all the way into matric. After I matriculated (2020) I have made it official and have been tutoring maths core to students grades 6 through to 12 as well as some physical science for grade 12.

Tutoring Approach:

My goal in tutoring is to show the beauty of maths to my students and help them enjoy the subject, or at the very least not dislike it (Maths isn't for everyone but we all have to do it at school). In my opinion, the way to do this is not rote/parrot learning, this just leads to frustration when you are stuck. I believe in not only explaining the 'how' but also the 'why', as well as how all the different topics in maths are connected. By teaching the behind the scenes, the proofs and derivations it empowers you to explore and work things out yourself when you are stuck.
I hope my students can see me as a friend as well as a teacher, here to help them improve their skills.
