Personal Description:

I was born in England to South African parents who were studying there at the time. I came to South Africa when I was very young and have lived here all my life. My school achievements were very average and my time to shine came when I went to university. I initially qualified as a Social Worker, and then went on to complete Honours, Masters and PhD degrees in Psychology, and a Basic Adult Education and Training Certificate. My academic career in Psychology focused largely on my two specialist areas, Cognitive Psychology, and Research Design and Statistics.

I have also worked as a Social Worker, and particularly enjoyed the counselling side of the work - trauma, grief, and disability. At school I have taught Primary, High, and Special-Needs. I have run my own practice teaching computer skills and I developed a computer centre for special-needs children. My private work still includes academic writing, proofreading and editing, statistical work - data analysis, research support, and counselling. My current "day-job" is as an academic, working broadly in Social Sciences. I lecture, supervise, and offer academic support.

With nearly 40 years of very varied working experience, I am approaching retirement from formal work, but looking to keep myself gainfully occupied with a variety of tasks suited to my many skills.

On the personal side, I have a foster-child (special-needs) aged 11, and three cats. My main hobbies are Highland dancing (which I also teach), and anything in the arts-and-crafts line.

Tutoring Experience:

I have 7 years of experience lecturing Psychology at residential universities.

I have about 7-8 years of experience lecturing a variety of subjects at private colleges. These subjects include Psychology, Business Statistics, Business English, Communication, Industrial Psychology, Sociology, Business Calculations.

I have worked full-time (6 years) and part time from home teaching and tutoring in a large variety of subjects. A large focus here has been on Research Design and Statistics.

School experience has been one year in LSEN, another in Primary (all subjects except Zulu), and about 2 years in High School (Maths, HSS, Arts and Culture, and Life Orientation).

I have also taught aspects of the research process to other professions such as doctors, accountants and lawyers.

My last 9 years have been more broadly in Social Sciences (Politics, International Relations, Conflict Transformation and Peace Studies, Government, Business and Ethics, and Sociology), where I have been involved in academic support (study skills etc), lecturing, and postgraduate research supervision.

I do editing and data analysis (stats) and I currently tutor two LSEN children and am looking to expand.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very much 'hands-on' and believe in learning-by-doing. My teaching is practical and my learners complete tasks to facilitate their grasping of concepts. I do not believe that the same approach works for everyone and I am able to adjust my techniques accordingly.

I can teach my learners in the comfort of their own homes in Pietermaritzburg. I am prepared to travel up to 25km for an additional contribution towards my travel costs.

I teach all over the world using Skype and similar platforms.
