Tutoring Approach:
My tutoring approach will be tailor made to my student. The way I teach will be informed by them and their ability, the way I structure my questions, the way I might even ask the questions, are all driven by that ability, and where they are in their development of mathematical thinking. I aim to help students not just over short term gain but also over the long term by discussing revision strategies and memory aids to ensure that topics covered in sessions will remain fresh and exam ready as an exam is not only a test of what they can do, it is also a test of what they can remember.
Below is an example I will use for my tutoring approach:
At the start of each meeting, I ask the student how they're feeling, like if they're tired or excited about something going on in their life. This helps me better prepare for any distractions or a slow lesson, and I think this also lets them know that I care about their well-being and not just that they're at the lesson. Then, I ask how if they had any wins since we last met. I find that starting with this positivity helps both of us focus on the good, which often makes for a more productive session.
I then go over the agenda for the session so that they know what to expect. I also typically give them a brief quiz to go over the previous sessions' topics and see what they remember and or where they may need additional work. After the review, I try to connect how those previous topics relate to what we're going over in the current session. I go through the lesson, which typically involves the student reading material aloud and discussing the prompts with me. Finally, I leave at least five minutes at the end of the session for any additional questions about the material.
