Personal Description:

Hi there. My name is James . I am from South Africa and reside in Cape Town. I graduated in Creative Brand Communications, Marketing, and Multi-media Design (CBC) and later in Theology (majoring in Psychology) (BTh). I was pleased to have obtained my BTh cum laude and am now doing a PhD (in my second year) in the Study of Religions at the University of Cape Town. My interests are broad, although I am currently looking at unconventional groups, new religious movements, fantasy-fiction religions, religion in media, and secularization theory.

Tutoring Experience:

For the past four years, I have tutored first-, second-, and third-year undergraduate students in various modules in The Study of Religions. To name a few, these include comparative religion (Religions, Past and Present), African religions (African Religious Traditions), the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), sociology of religion (Religion and Society), Media and Religion, and the Psychology of Religion. In the first semester of 2022, I guest lectured in both Religions, Past and Present (on Hinduism) and Religion and Society. I have taught both online (1.5 years) and in-person in tutorial and classroom settings (+- 3 years).

Tutoring Approach:

I am organized and always prepared to teach and guide my students. Colleagues in my department have often credited me for being prepared well before my lessons, usually by a week. These colleagues will occasionally wish to consult my extensive notes on readings and lessons in order to quicken their own preparations. I explain and summarize the readings from textbooks and course materials for the students. I also make PowerPoints. During the sessions, I allow students to ask me questions based on the readings and lecture materials. The majority of my student feedback on department forms at the end of semesters is positive.
