Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Jenny. I am from Taiwan originally and have been in NZ for 26 years. I am fully bilingual in English and Chinese Mandarin, and I can hold a short conversation in Spanish and Japanese. I have a Masters degree in Educational Psychology which is the combination of the 2 subjects I am passionate about. While working in schools, it was devastating to see children and adults fell through the gaps in mainstream education and are struggling with their learning experiences. I believe learning should be fun, enjoyable and exciting. That's why I chose to tutor privately to help people improve their learning experiences!
Tutoring Experience:
I have been a private tutor for 7 years and have taught in both classroom and private one-on-one settings. I have been teaching online as a part time tutor in the last 5 years as well. My students are of all ages and from all over the world. My specialty subjects are ESOL, Math, English, and Psychology. I worked as an ESOL tutor for 7 years, 3 of which were in Japan. I started tutoring NCEA Math and English back in 2020, and it has expanded into my part time work. I now tutor both primary and high school Math and English.
While studying for my Masters degree in educational psychology, I had experiences working with children in special education. I also had some experiences in tutoring academic writing while studying in university.
Tutoring Approach:
With my Educational Psychology background, I specialize in student centered approach. I believe in students owning their learning experiences, taking charge in what they want to learn, and learning at their own pace.
For ESOL teaching, I use authentic materials and design classes unique to the students' learning needs. I use teaching materials from everyday life, such as newspaper articles, advertisements, signs, movies and TV shows. I believe languages are not lifeless words in books but are meant to be lived and used in daily lives!
For teaching Math and English, I usually establish students' base-line knowledge/skills first, followed by identifying gaps, learning needs and setting goals. Teaching materials are usually tailored to bridge the gaps in knowledge and skills as well as students' learning needs. Students usually set their own goals with assistance from me and their parents. Learning goals are reviewed and tweaked at the end of every school term.
