Personal Description:
James (Jim) is your tutor and he started playing a clarinet when he was just 12 years of age.
He joined the Royal Marines School of Music when he was 15.
Royal Marines School of Music
James spent three years at the School and studied Clarinet, Saxophone and Violin.
He learnt to play in Military Bands, Marching Bands, Orchestras and Dance Bands and passed out as Musician first class when he was just 18.
Royal Marines Band Service
After passing out , he went into the adult side of the Band Service, and spent nine years on Royal Navy ships and, for the last four years of his service, he served in the Commander-in-Chief’s Band at Plymouth in England.
Musical involvement after the Marines
After leaving the Marines James played in a number of Bands in and around London until emigrating to New Zealand.
Since coming to New Zealand
Jim has played in a number of Dance and Jazz groups in the Auckland area and for the last 20 years has led his own group GROOVE, playing for private and public events. He has also played at the Bay of Islands Jazz Festival, the Whangarei Jazz Festival, and Hamilton Jazz Club. Jim has also played several times at the Auckland Jazz Club with his band ‘GROOVE’.

James studied clarinet and saxophone at the Royal Marines School of Music, for three years and after passing out went into the Royal Marines Bandservice and was in bands and orchestras on Naval ships and locations around the world.
After coming out of the service he played in bands and groups around the West London area until he emigrated to NZ, since then he has played in various bands in Auckland and for the last 20 years has led his own swing and jazz groups.
Tutoring Experience:
I am a clarinet and saxophone coach and see myself as a Tutor rather than a teacher.
Tutoring Approach:
My students are introduced to a Graded syllabus from elementary to advanced level.
They receive weekly lessons which comprise practising major and minor scales, arpeggios, and work through the Rubank methos series of books.
They receive one-on-one coaching and I provide examples on how to play and guide them through their lesson.
They are also introduced to tunes and pieces of music as they progress theough their lessons.
They also receive music knowledge and musicianship assistance.
