Personal Description:
Kia ora, ko George ahau. I currently help teaching 2nd year mathematics while doing a masters degree in pure mathematics at the university of Melbourne. I would really love to do some late high-school or early university tutoring, to guide others on the path to success in and love of science and mathematics.
Personal academic history:
-In high-school was excellence endorsed in NCEA level 3 when I was 15 and got two outstanding scholarship grades - Physics and Calculus.
-I studied my bachelor's degree from the university of Canterbury in mathematics with an A+ grade an numerous scholarships. These included the Page Memorial prize for the top achievement in 300-level mathematics and the UC Senior award for the top 25 students university-wide. I also conducted two funded research projects, one of which resulted in a published paper.
- I'm currently writing my thesis in an area of pure mathematics called algebraic K-theory at the university of Melbourne.
- I plan to return to Christchurch in 2026 for postgraduate study in mathematical physics.
Tutoring Experience:
2025 - University of Melbourne casual tutor in real analysis and linear algebra.
2024 - University of Melbourne casual tutor in real analysis.
2023 - University of Canterbury casual tutor in discrete mathematics and the arts.
2021 - High-school tutor in NCEA level 1 and 2 mathematics and computer science.
Tutoring Approach:
My teaching philosophy is based around two principles:
1) Build intuition through lots of computation and examples. It's so much easier to learn a more abstract concept when you easily know how things work for examples.
2) Mathematics is a superpower. Turning a completely unfamiliar question into a list of information, making a diagram, deriving algebraic relations, and solving efficiently and accurately is the cornerstone of intellectual maturity in late high-school maths and physics (as well as other stem disciplines). Memorising facts without understand the mathematics will not get you excellence in NCEA or university because it is completely ineffective against unfamiliar problems, which you are highly likely to encounter at least a couple times on an exam.
