Personal Description:
Kia ora, I’m Carmel
Language tutor | Culture lover | Confidence coach
I’m passionate about languages and even more passionate about helping people feel confident using them.
I’ve studied and taught Māori and Spanish at every level — from primary school to university — and I love creating learning experiences that feel personal, practical, and enjoyable. Whether you're just starting out or want to polish your skills, I tailor each lesson to suit your style, pace, and purpose.
When I’m not teaching or coaching, you’ll find me exploring the world with my son — we love discovering new places together. I also love to unwind with a good book, baking, cross-stitching, or dancing around the lounge to great music. These simple joys are the best things in life.
Tutoring Experience:
What I Bring to the Table
✔ Bilingual & multicultural upbringing
I grew up in both Māori and English speaking environments, studied French and German at high school before diving deep into Spanish at university.
✔ 10+ years of teaching & tutoring
From classroom teaching to private tutoring, I’ve supported learners from all walks of life — including international students living with me, adult learners, and school-age students.
✔ Academic & practical experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Māori and Spanish
Master’s Degree in Spanish
2.5 years as a part-time secondary school teacher
Tutoring experience in Māori, Spanish, and ESOL
Tutoring Approach:
I believe language learning should be:
Confidence-building – so you feel good about speaking up
Culturally rich – not just vocab, but connection
Tailored to you – no cookie-cutter lessons here
My goal is to help you feel at ease, enjoy the journey, and develop language skills that you can use — in the room, in real life.
