This is how 2 referees rated Scott:
Hi! My name is Scott and I’m currently a student in Trinity College Dublin, studying engineering with management. I repeated the leaving cert in 2018 and increased my previous score of 455 points to 543 points, including 88% in higher level maths and 85% in higher level applied maths. I would describe myself as an extremely friendly, hard working and dedicated individual. I’ve come to discover a passion for helping students who have difficulties with subjects I have comprehensively studied for the past few years, and consider myself a fully equipped and professional grinds tutor as a result.
I have been providing grinds since the start of September 2018 and have seen my students constantly exceed their own expectations throughout. Having repeated the leaving cert, I have first hand experience of what degree of detail and information must be provided in an exam to obtain high marks.
I have experience providing grinds to students of all levels, including 1st years who hope to be streamed to higher level maths in 2nd year, higher level junior cert students, as well as both higher and ordinary leaving cert students.
I would consider myself an extremely well equipped grinds teacher for a few reasons. For one, I have been on both sides of the wall in terms of mathematical ability; I scored 64% in higher maths in the 2017 leaving cert and 88% in the 2018 leaving cert. Secondly, my current college course has a predominant focus on maths and mechanics, and so I am constantly expanding my own capabilities, and thirdly because of the fact that I enrolled in an optional applied maths class in my transition year, and have studied this area of maths comprehensively, which has in turn greatly enhanced my understanding of the current project maths curriculum.
Approach to Grinds:
In my own opinion, the key to any student getting the most out of their grind is to feel relaxed and comfortable with their tutor. I constantly work towards developing such a relationship with my students. This in turn creates a safe and trusting environment for the student, which will optimize their learning experience.
In my grinds, I like to put a strong emphasis on the importance of comprehending even the most basic aspects of maths, and slowly progress on these crucial foundations.
In a lot of my new students, I see mathematical confidence that has taken a beating, and often as a result the student will try to “learn off” how to answer particular questions, rather than comprehend how and why you get from one line to the next. This is the number one thing I aim to work against in my grinds. From my own experience, once the foundations of each chapter are understood comprehensively, attempting even the hardest of questions becomes a walk in the park.
If you decide to hire me as a grinds teacher, I will ensure to provide you with detailed study notes, study tips, and constant insights into my own thought process as I work through tough questions. In my own experience, these 3 key elements combine to restore the student’s confidence in their own ability, and in turn sufficiently prepares them for exams.
