Which Tutor?

Choosing the right tutor to help their children progress academically can be hard for parents - you want someone who can really can push up an exam grade, explain difficult concepts, and who will return every week with the dedication to help your child succeed.

To help you get a better idea of the individual behind the tutor, we've given each tutor a chance to introduce themselves through their online profile, and talk about their qualifications, experience and approach to giving grinds.

Approach to Grinds

Consider your prospective tutor's approach to grinds. An individual who advocates a militant approach may be more conducive to preparing your child for looming exams, but alternatively a more casual mentor may help your child feel more comfortable in talking about the subject areas they are finding difficult. Often the best tutor-student relationships are forged when student and tutor have something in common, for example, matching students with tutors who share a similar interest or background can make the first lesson more relaxed.

Intensity of Grinds

If you are choosing a tutor for a child, we would recommend the following:

Primary - 1 hour sessions maximum; 30 - 45mins is often preferred. To make grinds for this age group worth the money you will spend, you may wish to consider spreading the time over more than one child, e.g. the tutor can teach two children for half an hour each.

Junior Cycle / Junior Certificate - 1 hour is fine; 1 hour 30 mins if your child has the stamina, or important exams approaching.

Senior Cycle / Leaving Certificate - 1 hour to 1 hour 30mins if you are having grinds on a regular basis. 1 hour 30mins - 2 hours 30mins if you are cramming before exams.

Duration of Grinds

The majority of parents are looking for a tutor who will be able to teach their child over a particular length of time. So, if you're looking for grinds throughout a stretch of exams be sure to state that you'll need someone for that period.

We encourage students and parents to give feedback about their tutor so other users can benefit from any recommendations.
