Personal Description:

Please note, I am currently only offering online grinds via zoom call.

Trinity College Dublin graduate with a 1st class honours masters degree in mechanical and manufacturing engineering.

I am currently working with Accenture as a management consulting analyst, which I thoroughly enjoy. In the meantime, I enjoy being active including playing football with a local club, going to the gym, and swimming!

In general I am quite an adaptable and friendly person, I would describe myself as having a relaxed yet enthusiastic personality. Teaching grinds was actually my student job, however I have decided to continue it on weekends even though I am working full time now because I find a lot of passion and joy from teaching and helping other students succeed - as I have had my own issues in this regard when I was younger.

Tutoring Experience:

I have more than 5 years experience giving maths lessons, covering students of all levels and ages during this time, including teaching in private 1-1 settings as well as class groups of 10+. I would consider myself a great option for students who are eager to become better at maths in a learning environment that is casual yet focused.

I typically structure my lessons by determining a roadmap, along with the student, that considers all areas of the curriculum that need to be known. I take time to tailor this roadmap to the student as much as possible, to accommodate any discrepancies in some areas, and strengths in other areas. This roadmap includes monthly tests (completed during the students time) during which we cover an entire chapter once it has been completed during class time. I strongly emphasise the importance of correcting these tests, and encourage the students to grade their own exams to get a better picture of their thinking before reviewing them in class time. For me, this is an absolutely critical aspect of effective learning so I really focus on helping the student to build a structured approach to this.

Approach to Grinds:

With regards to the maths, I put particular emphasis on having the student draw conclusions to problems themselves, rather than fully explain problems to them at the start. This serves two purposes:

1. It keeps the student engaged with the grind and helps to maintain their concentration which is always a challenge (even for me when I was a student)

2. It means the student will have a better chance of retaining the information they’ve just learned, since they arrived at the conclusion themselves. This also helps to sharpen the critically important skill of independent problem solving.

Of course, the student may sometimes be genuinely stumped for an answer. In this case, I find that writing out a solution while comprehensively explaining my thought process in a manner that is simple to understand throughout, typically works very well. This in turn coaxes the student to develop a ‘critical thinking’ mindset which can be applied to a broad variety of questions throughout the curriculum.
