Personal Description:
I am a Trinity College Dublin graduate with a 1st class honours masters degree in mechanical and manufacturing engineering, managing to achieve straight firsts across all academic components in my master year. In addition to English, I speak French to a professional working standard.
I am currently working with Accenture as a supply chain strategy consultant, which I thoroughly enjoy. In the meantime, I enjoy being active including playing football with a local club, going to the gym, and swimming!
In general I am quite an adaptable and friendly person, I would describe myself as having a relaxed yet enthusiastic and driven personality. Teaching grinds was actually my student job, however I decided to continue providing lessons on weekends even though I am working full time now - I find a strong joy and passion in teaching, and helping other students succeed. Having struggled with maths when I was younger, my passion for teaching is amplified by that experience. I used to never believe maths was “my subject” until I was finally able to break through that wall and achieve strong results. It’s always a thoroughly rewarding experience helping other students to do the same!
Tutoring Experience:
I have now 6 years experience giving maths lessons to a total of around 100 students, working with students of all levels and ages during this time. This includes teaching in private 1-1 settings as well as in class groups of 10+. I would consider myself a great option for students who are eager to become better at maths in a learning environment that is casual yet focused.
I typically structure my lessons by determining a roadmap, along with the student, that considers all areas of the curriculum that need to be known. I take time to tailor this roadmap to the student as much as possible, to accommodate any discrepancies in some areas, and strengths in other areas. This roadmap includes monthly tests (completed during the students time) which will cover an entire chapter once it has been completed during class time. I strongly emphasise the importance of correcting these tests, and encourage the students to grade their own exams to get a better understanding of their thinking and approach, before reviewing this together during class time. For me, this is an absolutely critical aspect of effective learning so I really focus on helping the student to build this structured approach so that they can then implement it themselves.
Approach to Grinds:
With regards to the maths, I put particular emphasis on having the student draw conclusions to problems themselves, rather than fully explain problems to them at the start. This serves two purposes:
1. It keeps the student engaged with the grind and helps to maintain their concentration which can sometimes be a challenge.
2. It means the student will have a better chance of retaining the information they’ve just learned, since they arrived at the conclusion themselves. This also helps to sharpen the critically important skill of independent problem solving.
Of course, the student may sometimes be genuinely stumped for an answer. In this case, I find that writing out a solution while comprehensively explaining my thought process in a manner that is simple to understand throughout, typically works very well. This in turn coaxes the student to develop a ‘critical thinking’ mindset which can be applied to a broad variety of questions throughout the curriculum.

He is getting really high results during class exams and his academic confidence is growing.
It’s easy to see Scott’s passion for wanting to be the best he can be. He sets extremely high goals for himself and strives to achieve them. This passion is contagious and he can demonstrate to any student that you can achieve whatever you want by working hard. He makes working hard seem fun and cool. We are so happy to have Scott tutor for us. He is an excellent role model for a teenage boy. If our son follows in his footsteps then we will be so proud.
Scott.
