Personal Description:

I have just completed my PhD in the school of Biochemistry and Immunology and in Trinity Centre for Bioengineering, Trinity College Dublin. I obtained my B.A. in Neuroscience from Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience in 2014 (II-I). In 2015 I went on to receive a M.Sc. in Immunology from the School of Biochemistry and Immunology, TCD. I was then awarded a research scholarship from Trinity College Dublin in October 2015 to carry out my PhD studies as part of the Regenerative Medicine team, where my project focused on assessing the immune response to various biomaterials for use in bone tissue engineering strategies.
During my undergraduate course I studied modules in fundamental biology, cellular structure and function, cell metabolism, physiology, Genetics, Immunology and neuroscience prior to majoring in Neuroscience. During the Neuroscience programme I undertook several modules such as neurochemistry, neurogenetics, neurophysiology and neuroanatomy, neuroimmunology & neuroinflammation, neuropharmacology and scientific literature skills. My masters course provided lectures and courses in Immunology, immunological technologies, Immunogenetics, Microbe detection and evasion, Clinical-Immunology, Parasite Immunology, Tumour Immunology, Global Infectious Diseases, Immunotherapeutics and product-development.

Tutoring Experience:

I have gained a wealth of teaching experience over the course of my studies. During my PhD I demonstrated, and led, undergraduate biology labs for 4 years which involved supervising practicals, grading of laboratory reports and examinations, providing feedback to students and teaching laboratory techniques and experimental design. Additionally, I have been a tutorial group leader for MSc. Immunology students which involved preparation of group tutorials, small group lectures in molecular biology and immunology and group tutorials on scientific critical thinking. I also have been involved in correction of exams and module assignments for this M.Sc. course.
During my PhD studies I have supervised a number of master’s students, interns and undergraduates who have come into the lab. This supervision involved design of 3-4 month research projects, thesis correction and assessment.

Approach to Grinds:

I want to be able to create an environment where the student feels comfortable and relaxed to ask questions, and feel like they are getting the right kind of support and guidance. I aim to offer a teaching strategy where an in depth understanding of the fundamentals of science is paramount, and more complex ideas are layered upon this, with clear learning objectives in place in order for each student to reach their specific goal. For University level students I can also offer teaching in design of research projects and critical scientific thinking to aid in research based assignments that they may have.
