Personal Description:

I've been teaching / tutoring / mentoring maths for over 23 years.

I've helped hundreds of happy students from years 1 to 12 in NSW, Queensland, Cambodia and Vietnam to catch up, get ahead and accelerate their maths learning.

Here's what Patrick Malek, a Year 9 student on the Gold Coast said recently:

"Mr Steve has made Learning Math feel more fun and relaxing, instead of feeling anxious when preparing for exams. My grades were just above average before I met Mr Steve, but now I am well above average. My main weakness before Mr Steve was rushing through questions and not slowing down to think. Now, Mr Steve has introduced me to unique and effective ways to solve questions and set out working out. I would 100% recommend Mr Steve for other students."

Helen Arfanis, a science teacher and parent said "Steve is a unique teacher who goes beyond the call of duty to help my daughter not only to engage with the subject but to get her to the point where she is confident and getting the results she is capable of. He has a good sense of humour and uses different tools to enhance learning. Overall, a wonderful person who is caring, resourceful, passionate, and motivated to do his best."

It's my firm belief that anyone can become a mathematician if given the opportunity, encouragement, direction and inspiration.

I love maths and my passion is contagious - my students soon develop a similar passion.

But not everyone has the same passion.

I understand many start tuition as a last resort, sometimes forcibly or coerced by parents. Some feel like failures and want to give up before they've started.

Some are carrying a lot of baggage and have been conditioned over the years to believe they're hopeless and dumb and maths just isn't for them.

If your child is struggling, there is hope! Don't give up!

I will help them to identify the issues, catch up and get ahead. I'll teach them 'to think in maths'.

If your child is gifted, I will help them accelerate their learning and maximise their potential.

I've personally worked with and helped hundreds of students to learn to love maths and thrive.

There is nothing more exciting than reviving a smouldering wick, imparting hope and watching learners thrive as they discover THEY CAN DO IT!

I'll help your child to identify and acknowledge their weaknesses, embrace their strengths and to learn how to turn their stumbling stones into stepping stones.

We'll plug the holes, stop the leaks and make sure they stop falling behind. We'll work together to make maths easy, fun and practical.

Tuition Experience:

Over the past 23 years, I've worked with just about every type of learner I can think of. Learners of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

This has included:

~ students from non-English backgrounds
~ young learners
~ reluctant learners
~ 'difficult' learners
~ struggling learners
~ learners who were branded failures
~ learners who were many years behind
~ gifted learners
~ learners from selective schools
~ learns wanting help with school exam or selective school test preparation
~ unmotivated learners needing a coach and mentor to bring out their best
~ high achievers who wanted to soar higher (90% - 100%)

It doesn't matter how LOW or HIGH your child is scoring in maths, with the right advice, guidance and direction, they WILL improve, become BETTER learners and reach their full potential.

Tutoring Approach:

Maths is an exciting subject that's so useful and beneficial to our daily lives.

It's my goal to instill a love for maths in every student I teach and to help them see the connection with everyday life.

Maths is everywhere -- our bodies are mathematical machines. Music, football, soccer and computer games are all based on maths and require mathematical skills to enjoy and play. People sell themselves short when they think they're hopeless at maths. They don't realise how much they actually use maths each day and use it successfully.

Over the years maths has become a subject rather than a lifeskill. It has become boring, a chore and a subject that stereotypically is for 'nerds' to enjoy. Teachers hear students whine over and over again… 'how is this going to help me in life?' I hear you - these are exactly my thoughts! Through hands on, practical activities I help my students see the connection between the classroom and real life and to see how easy maths is when you enjoy it.

I help my students to become enquirers, to think more deeply about simple things and to forever question and reason rather than memorising. Soon they're enjoying maths and effortlessly passing exams and getting great reports.

Instead of memorisation, we break everything down into simple steps - the emphasis is on understanding and discovering the connections between old and new concepts and making sure that everything makes sense.

My lessons are practical, engaging, interactive and highly motivating. There is less chalk and talk and more hands-on, student-centred activities. Each lesson is tailor made to the individual student. I do not surf the net, read newspapers, mark other students' work, chat on social media or take selfies while my students sweat over hundreds of brain numbing repetitive questions.

I note all problem areas and these are worked on and revisited in subsequent lessons and recycled prior to exams. My lessons are well prepared and worksheets and additional practice questions are provided at no extra charge. Assistance with school homework and exam preparation are included and regular communication with parents / caregivers ensures a learning environment that fosters progress.

As William Butler Yeats said: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."

Let's put an end to bad school reports and start lighting those fires!
