Work Experience: Youth Worker, Community Development Worker ( includes o/seas work for the United Nations and Ausaid, Regional and isolated communities of Australia), School Welfare Officer and Education Participation Officer (Western Australia)
Personal: Widowed, 16 year old son. Have recently moved from WA to NSW to support and care for elderly parents. Well traveled, enjoy working in and experiencing other cultures. To keep life balanced and in perspective I enjoy daily walks, yoga practice, swimming and a bit of meditation to calm the mind. Hiking and camping in the bush are other loves.
Tuition Experience:
I have experience in many diverse areas. I have taught in Papua New Guinea, as well as remote Aboriginal Communities as a replacement teacher or when teachers either left the community.
As a qualified teacher I taught in Carnarvon Senior High School for 5 years as a History/economics/geography/political science (Society and Environment). After school I tutored students in homework classes, I also tutored 'Special Needs Students' for the WA Dept. of Disability Services Gascoyne Region.
Tutoring Approach:
When working with students I work holistically - patiently building and developing their weaker areas, as well as strengthening and challenging their stronger areas. I approach this a) asking what they are currently studying and b) by listening to what the student has to say about themselves, their expectations and what they hope to achieve. I also will discuss with the parent what their expectations are of their child. This provides a foundation on which to build a personalised study program.
Working with the curriculum and curriculum outcomes I will support them with homework tasks and areas in which the student is having difficulty by develop tasks that enhance the student's ability; using scaffolding techniques and encouraging good effort through praise to build confidence.
Finally, I will provide regular updates and openly discuss with the parent the achievements and concerns regarding their child's progress.
