I am an ambitious and dedicated Structural Engineer with more than 15 years of industrial and research (Master's degree) overseas engineering experience, and 8-years (2004-2012) of local Australian research and tertiary teaching experience (Monash University, Clayton campus). My most favorable subjects since I was a kid are Maths and Physics. I scored 100% in these two subjects at my overseas VCE-equivalent level. I am a proud father of two kids: a daughter in year 10, and a son in year 7 (in 2015). I am keen on personally following-up all their subjects, especially maths. They became math gurus just as me and my daughter was awarded with many awards of distinction and excellence since she was in year 7.
My formal teaching experience spanned for 8 years (2004-2012). I worked as a Tertiary Engineering tutor for 8-years in the Department of Civil Engineering/ Monash University. I was appointed in 2011 as a Casual Lecturer, in the same department, right after the conclusion of my PhD degree in Structural Engineering. The subjects I used to teach were related to Structural Engineering Design which involves of lots of highly advanced math's skills. I am exceptionally conversant in utilizing math's IT resources (e.g. Microsoft Office Excel software, graphical calculators and ClassPads, online maths resources such as online differentiation and integration calculators, specialized engineering modelling and design softwares… etc). To be fully prepared for my prospective math tuition, I followed a very comprehensive reviewing plan: it starts in mid 2013 by purchasing all curriculum math books and resources from Jacaranda website, ESPECIALLY ALL VCE Mathematics books (Maths Quest 11: Standard General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, and Advanced General Mathematics; Maths Quest 12: Further Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, and Specialist Mathematics). My plan, which was concluded by the end of 2014, covered LITERALLY all chapters, sections and their relevant worked examples for the above-mentioned books. I manually solved all chapters' exercises, ' Chapter review' questions, 'Exam Practice' and 'Cumulative Exam Practice' questions.
I strongly believe in individual behavioral and learning differences amongst children. As such, children have their own, sometimes unique, individual attributes which should be closely assessed / monitored by the tutor. Every child learns in his or her own way, meaning personal attention can make all the difference in mastering math. My approach to math tuition consists of an individually tailored 3-stage plan: Identify, reform, and sustain. Any robust math (or any subject) tuition plan starts with identifying points of weakness, either in the child's accumulated math skills or learning strategies. Any average math tutor should be able to assess these weaknesses (as per any particular math's chapter) within the first couple of hours. Then comes the reform stage which simply involves of adopting the right individually-tailored strategies to counteract the child's difficulties in that particular chapter/skill. Finally, and for any keen math tutor, the most critical stage in their job (i.e. sustainability stage) is being able to enhance and build upon the progress achieved in stage two. It essentially consists of adopting and cultivating a long-term sustainable individual plan designed towards fully understanding and empowering the students with all relevant mathematical concepts and skills, and attaining the best outcomes in the their math assignments, tests, or exams.
