Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Stephen O’Mahony. I’m 34 years old and originally from Limerick, where I went to school at Crescent College Comprehensive before studying Computer Science with Spanish at University College Cork. I’ve always had a love for languages, and that deepened during the seven years I spent living in Honduras, working with a non-profit childcare organisation that supported orphaned and abandoned children. I began as a volunteer, later took on various roles, and eventually served as Director of the organisation for four years. During my time there, I was speaking Spanish every day and also ran youth empowerment and leadership programmes for young people living in the home. Now back in Limerick, I work in my family’s retail business—but I continue to offer Spanish grinds because I truly enjoy teaching and helping others grow in confidence with the language. I’m friendly, sociable, and passionate about making learning a positive and rewarding experience.
Tutoring Experience:
I’ve been giving Spanish grinds in Limerick for the past two years, working with both Junior Cert and Leaving Cert students. I’m very familiar with the curriculum and the common challenges students face in preparing for written, aural, and oral exams. Having studied Spanish at Leaving Cert and university level, and having taught English abroad for several years, I bring both formal training and practical, real-world language experience to my lessons. My time in Honduras not only helped me become a fluent Spanish speaker, but also gave me valuable teaching experience across a wide range of age groups and learning levels. The combination of local tutoring and international experience means I can adapt my teaching style to suit each student’s needs and help them progress with confidence.
Approach to Grinds:
My approach to grinds is supportive, flexible, and focused on the individual student. I aim to build confidence and understanding by creating a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and working through areas of difficulty. I adapt my lessons depending on the student’s goals—whether that’s improving exam results, strengthening grammar and vocabulary, or building fluency for oral exams. I make strong use of conversation practice, past papers, listening exercises, and vocabulary-building techniques, always linking them back to the curriculum. Above all, I try to make the learning process engaging and accessible. I take genuine satisfaction in helping students develop their skills and reach their potential, and I always strive to make the language feel practical, relevant, and rewarding.
