Personal Description:
I hold two years of experience teaching and working in Higher Education at Adams State University, in the beautiful San Luis Valley of Alamosa, Colorado, and am a former Division II student-athlete and Irish International distance runner. I hold a First-Class Honours MSc in Kinesiology, with an Emphasis in Exercise Physiology and Sport Performance Nutrition. I have also conducted original female athlete research, and collaborated interdepartmentally with a major R1 university whilst completing my MSc thesis, for which I was the recipient of a RMACSM research grant award.
Tutoring Experience:
I hold extensive experience teaching in both the classroom setting, alongside the human performance laboratory of the Department of Kinesiology at Adams State University. I have also worked in student services, through the form of writing instruction and tutoring, and coordinating learning accommodations and accessibility support services for students with disabilities on campus. Through both roles, I hold extensive experience in interactive lesson plan and PowerPoint presentation design, designing, administering and grading in-class assessments and test exams, creating virtual monthly and end-of-semester student report cards, and teaching students new testing software and programming.
I provide both academic and creative writing instruction to students, including editing student text, template formatting, and citation styles, and co-ordinate both individual and group session tutoring; throughout all providing individualised, one-on-one feedback to my students. While my professional qualifications specialise in scientific writing (specifically, APA citation formatting), I have also written numerous creative writing pieces and papers utilising MLA citation style for various general-education class requirements, whilst working towards my Associate’s degree.
Outside of the classroom; I have worked as a Special Olympics Physical Activity Instructor, through which I was responsible for designing and implementing physical activity training plans, tailored specifically to the unique and individual requirements of each student-athlete. I have also served as the co-ordinating head in hosting Community Fitness Testing evenings through Adams State’s Human Performance Lab, as part of a community outreach / public health initiative!
Approach to Grinds:
My teaching philosophy centres around teaching my students the ability to think critically and open-mindedly about the material they are presented with; and, most importantly of all, to develop a strong sense of resiliency throughout the learning process. I encourage my students to question everything, and to remain curious and open-minded about the material they are presented with, to foster them in becoming independent, free, forward, and creative thinkers; all of which lay the foundation for future research, entrepreneurial, and general life skills.
I lead by immersive teaching practices and encourage open-class debates, while exploring real-life scenario applications, with a particular focus on the “applied” part of any subject matter. I love and thrive interacting one-on-one with others, and possess a keen interest in the application of knowledge to applied, real-world scenarios. I am passionate about education and teaching, both in the form of remaining involved in the world of working one-one-one with my students, and through encouraging the pursuit of continual / further education.
In terms of availability, I am incredibly flexible, with week-long availability through providing online lessons, and am always happy to work around the student's hours / best meet your needs; together, we can organise a time and schedule that works for you. In terms of frequency, this largely depends on the nature of the subject to be covered, or the type of material you are looking for help with (for instance, if preparing for a specific exam; assessing the extent of material to be covered in advance, and working back from this deadline).
These approaches will best determine within how many lesson plans we are able to adequately prepare you, so that you are ready to sit the exam, submit a project, or finesse a written piece - feeling confident and capable in the work that you have put in, and your ability to handle the material you have learned!
