Information About Rory - Dublin tutor

Personal Description:

I'm an experienced tutor currently in my third year Engineering. I have an aptitude for maths and a keen interest in business so naturally, these are the subjects I gravitated towards when I began tutoring. I ranked first in my year of 120 students in Leaving Cert business and was in the top maths class all the way through school.
I achieved a first-class honours in my first year of engineering in UCD and have maintained a 3.7 GPA through my second year. This degree has greatly furthered my problem-solving skills and reasoning. I'm pretty laid back and understand the stress students go through during exams seasons as I was in their shoes not so long ago. I believe in hard work but also think balance is important and I clear my head on the Gaelic/rugby pitch or by banging away on the piano

Tutoring Experience:

My first student was my brother who I have given grinds to (unpaid) over the years to help him through the junior cert and now the leaving cert. I've since taken on multiple students in both junior cert maths and business. These experiences have really helped me to see the work through the eye of the student and I've learned to break seemingly difficult questions/problems into bite-sized manageable chunks. Last year was busy for me as I was settling into college but now I'm looking to take on more students. My other teaching experiences include giving piano lessons and volunteering as a coach for the u17's Gaelic football team at my local club.

Approach to Grinds:

This depends on which subject. However, all the techniques I use are grounded in science. I understand that different students learn in different ways and so I am adaptive with which methods I use. I think deep understanding is foundational and that trying to rote learn something you don't understand is not a good use of time.
For Business studies where rote learning is required, I suggest the use of flashcards as this is supported by science as the best memorising technique and will help my students study more productively and achieve better grades in less time. I used this technique to receive a grade of 97% in Leaving Cert Business.
When studying Maths I believe practising questions is key so I work through problems with my students and help them develop a problem-solving mindset and approaches to different questions.
