Personal Description:

I have recently retired from the New York City Department of Education, where I enjoyed a career as an English Teacher for the past 22 years. My husband and I have returned home to Shanagolden, and I am a fully registered English Teacher with the Teaching Council. I have been teaching English for over 30 years, including being Head Teacher of English at a private boarding school in India. I enjoy working with secondary school and third-level students, helping them with their fiction and non-fiction writing. I also enjoy working with ELL adults, helping them understand the structure and use of the English language to communicate effectively and efficiently. I hold a PhD from the University of Limerick.

Tutoring Experience:

I am a New York State Certified English Teacher who has taught English Language, Literature, and Composition for over 22 years. I have taught over 200 students a day in a widely diverse environment. Courses taught included Western World Literature, Women in Literature, Literary Analysis, SAT Review, and AP Language and Composition, created by the College Board.

When completing my BA in English in NY, I worked for the Carter-Burden Center, an organization that provided classes for immigrants and refugees living in NYC. I taught Business and Hospitality Communications at the Institute of Technology in Tralee from 2002 to 2007 and mentored Masters Degree students at UL from 2006 to 2007. From 2007-2023, I returned to NYC and continued to teach English to students in grades 9-12. I was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Brooklyn College from 2007 to 2023, which included mentoring students in their writing and analytical development.

Approach to Grinds:

I enjoy working with students at all levels. of learning, and there is no question that is not important. I work with you to identify your particular goal or objective. Then, I create a scaffolded design and lesson plans to help you achieve your goal. We work at your pace and can review material until you feel confident in your understanding and skills. I expect you to complete exercises or assignments and to be engaged during our time together. If you need further support or are a particular learner, we adapt so that you are comfortable. I am open to discussion and am resilient. I can differentiate and feel comfortable in live sessions or on Zoom.
