Personal Description:

Hi there, my name is Richard and I am a doctoral student studying at the University of Oxford in England. I am currently home in the Cavan area due to the coronavirus lockdown. It looks like this will last some time, and I thought I could pass on my knowledge to students here in Ireland who, through no fault of their own, have fallen behind in their coursework and who might be looking to improve their overall marks. I have studied quite a few degrees and am very much so able to help in a number of different areas. My educational background is as follows: I went to St. Andrew's College and Wesley College in Dublin, completing my Leaving Certificate in 2011 before studying at university level in Northern Ireland and England. Currently, I am a student at Oxford where I have studied three degrees in the past 4 years (at present I am working on a doctorate which is set to be completed within the next two years). Learning from a student who is at the University of Oxford is a big opportunity and I would really encourage you to get in touch!

In terms of my tutoring style, I am friendly and fun - remember that I am a student myself so I know how it feels! However, I won't let you get distracted from your studies and in particular the goals you want to achieve. I have an excellent record at lifting grades and empowering the student to better understand their subject and its meaning, allowing them to achieve greater things both now and in future. Most recently, I have helped quite a few students at Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University and University of Limerick (including the Mary Immaculate campus in Thurles) - each student has seen their grades go up which naturally improves their chances of further study, accessing better paid jobs and strengthening their CV.

Tutoring Experience:

Tutoring in the Irish and UK school system (GCSE, A-Level, Junior Cert and Leaving Cert), with students from a wide range of schools, both private and public.

Tutoring students at the University of Oxford (on a private level), in subjects such as English, History, Philosophy, Ethics and Theology. Additional tutoring (which has proven very popular) which focuses on improving essay writing at any level, especially for undergraduate and post-graduate courses.

Tutoring and correcting applications/essays/theses from students in other universities, including: Trinity College Dublin, University of Limerick (Ireland); University of Edinburgh (Scotland); Vrije University (Netherlands); Baylor University (TX, USA).

Presenting research seminars in the University of Oxford, specifically in History, Theology and Philosophy and Migration Studies. Lectures focusing on the Anglo-Saxon world, Britain and Ireland in the Medieval Age, the Reformation, Modern Theology (including 20th Century Theologians and Philosophers, Ethics), Human Migration Patterns, Biblical Studies, Systematic Theology, Current Trends in Post-Modernism, Psychology and the Truth.

Approach to Grinds:

The initial grind will focus on getting to know the student(s) and their ability in their chosen field. I will also ascertain what sort of goals the student(s) wishes to set, and will work with the student to try set a realistic level that could be reached over a set period of weeks/months. This helps the student remain accountable to their own goal, and further enables me to prepare lessons based around that goal. Please note that I recognise that such goals can be, on occasion, impossible to reach due to unforeseen circumstances, however on the whole they are a healthy aid to the student which is why I use them.

After this initial grind, I will then work to prepare lesson plans based upon how many grinds the student(s) desires, with a focus on how to achieve long term success based upon short term teaching and the implementation of good practices. In my mind, I would be happier giving the student the tools they need to understand their subject and its relevance in today's world so that they can learn and grow independently of a tutor (it sounds like I am doing myself out of a job but this is really the best way to learn!). Of course, I am also very focused on exams and enabling the student to fulfil what each exam paper requires of them. As grinds are typically quite short, I am happy to correct some work from home so that the benefit to the student can be maximised. I am also very happy to conduct some grinds via an online platform (especially with concerns over coronavirus) - if a face to face grind is required that can also be arranged.

I am also happy to support students with one off papers - typically dissertations or theses. I understand these papers are weighted quite heavily, and they as a result represent a large percentage of a degree's final grade. I can provide notes, corrections and help draft these papers for students who are looking for a helping hand in this area.
