Personal Description:

Hi there, my name is Richard and I am a doctoral student at the University of Oxford in England. According to the rankings, it is the number one university in the world (see for yourself:!/page/0/length/25/sort_by/rank/sort_order/asc/cols/stats . Clearly, I know what I am doing as this is my third degree in Oxford in the past six years. Studying here has taught me many invaluable lessons, and has improved my capabilities as a student beyond what I could have thought was possible. This experience is what I am offering you, a chance to learn from me, and see for yourself how simply your confidence and results can become so much more than what you are struggling with now.

The simple reality is that every student I have tutored has seen their grades shoot up, from students moving from a fail to pass, those struggling with a 2:2 moving into a strong 2:1 and also those who are aiming for a First. I can help any student increase their marks, whether you are finding things difficult and not getting the marks you feel capable of or just wanting to go beyond what you think is possible, I will do my absolute best to support you for what is a very reasonable price (especially compared to other tutors who simply don’t have my experience or two Oxford degrees in the bag). This past year, I’ve had around twelve students between Ireland and England who have been struggling with their work due a variety of issues (usually poor marking schemes, the ever-present curse of bad teaching and the drama of Covid-19!); each of these students have now moved up at least one grade level thanks to my help and their work - their feedback is available to view. So, if you wish to be part of that and improve your own grades, then fire me a message and let’s see what we can do!

Tutoring Experience:

Tutoring in the Irish and UK school system (Junior Cert and Leaving Cert, GCSE and A-Level), with students from a wide range of schools, both private and public.

Tutoring students at the University of Oxford (on a private level), in subjects including:

Additional tutoring for university students (which has proven extremely popular) has focused on improving essay-writing skills at any level, from beginner to advanced. I am currently writing a 100,000 word thesis in Oxford with an acclaimed professor, and I started with what was a hopelessly bad 1,000 word essay in my undergraduate, so trust me when I say that I can help you learn how to write your essays in a fluid, simple but effective manner!

Lastly, I am very happy to work with students on a one off basis, typically proof reading their thesis for final year submission (whether undergraduate or post-graudate). I have recently finished proofing theses for students from Oxford, Trinity College Dublin, University of Edinburgh, Vrije University (Netherlands) and Harvard (USA). As these are usually larger pieces of work, there may be additional costs associated but message me and we will see what can be arranged.

Approach to Grinds:

In terms of my tutoring style, I am friendly and fun - remember that I am a student myself so I know how it feels! However, I won’t let you get distracted from your studies and in particular the goals you want to achieve – that’s why you pay me right? My record at lifting grades is outstanding, and I will always ensure that my tutoring helps you to understand exactly what is expected of you. This is critical when it comes to a degree, as there are many students who produce great work but it receives poor marks, simply because they don’t fully understand what is expected of them from the examiners and marking conventions.

Most likely, I would begin with listening to you and your story. Your degree, why you are studying, how your grades have been and where you wish them to be – all of this matters because it is important to who you are as a person. Understanding these can help to unlock your potential as a student, and will certainly support me as I try to drive your performance up in a short space of time. Usually, what follows next is some examination of your work – I will read over a sample and see where I can help and what exactly I can offer you. At this stage, you won’t have paid anything, I would never charge for this initial work as it’s simply unfair to you. There may be some students who, for whatever reason, I don’t think I can offer the right support to and it simply wouldn’t be fair to charge you for this information. For those that I do choose to keep working with, I would hope that the first session and my subsequent reading of your work will help us as we try to work together to better your grades.

From this point on, we can then begin to plan our next moves and ascertain what needs done (whether it be improving your writing style / structure and planning / answering precise research questions / closer analysis of sources and bringing your papers up a few levels with extra tweaks). This will be done in discussion with you, and it will of course be planned to suit you and your specific needs. This includes my commitment to support you in relation to essay reading, proofing and correcting, and of course grinds in your chosen subject. I can do all of these, or a mixture, it truly does depend on what you feel is best suited to you.
