Information About Neil - Dublin tutor

Personal Description:

My name is Neil. I am a History and Law student currently studying at Trinity College Dublin. I picked this course due to my keen interest in both History and English which I got from school. I also loved business in school. I excelled in all of these subjects due to my study and exam techniques, which I can now teach to others.

Tutoring Experience:

While I have no formal teaching experience, I know the Leaving Cert well. I just finished my Leaving Cert last year and got 613 points. I achieved a 100% mark in History, 96% in English, and 93% in Business. Over the last few months, I have been helping friends and family with their senior cycle schoolwork and I realised it would be a good idea for me to teach grinds.

Studying Law and History has further improved my essay-writing ability. Of course, studying history has improved my knowledge and ability to write about history, while studying Law has given me a heightened ability to construct essays and arguments, vital skills for English.

Approach to Grinds:

I believe that exam technique is vital to success in any subject. Often students who are strong at a certain subject will crumble when faced with a Leaving Cert exam, lost at how to approach it. Knowing the time you want to give to each section, what order to answer each question in, and what to do when faced with an unexpected question etc. are just as vital to knowing the material of each subject.

Efficient use of time and study is also extremely important. Learning essays off by heart, trying to learn the whole course, and trying to memorise a thousand definitions is usually a waste of time. Being able to create effective essay plans, knowing exactly how much you need to know to get the grade you want and how to practice exam questions properly and quickly are necessary skills often not taught in schools.

The reason I can teach these things so well is because I have only just done the Leaving Cert. I understand exactly how the exam functions and how to succeed in it. I know the right technique for each exam and how to effectively study for them.

I will correct essays and past papers. I take the time needed to really go through each piece of work, far more than they could get in school.
I also have many essay plans and past papers, as well as my actual Leaving Cert papers, some answers containing 100% marks. Going through these examples, as well as showing the student where they are going wrong, is very effective. Not only can I teach the knowledge of each course, but also the technique, study and mindset needed to excel.
