Personal Description:

I am a qualified Home Economics and Biology teacher with a Masters in my subject areas. I achieved a first class honours in my degree. I studied in St Angela's College in Sligo and am based in Dublin now. I became a teacher because my own Home Economics teacher inspired me so much. She didn't use the traditional chalk and talk teaching but focused on us as individuals with individual needs and abilities. She used humour and anecdotes to teach complex ideas and make them relatable which has carried through my own teaching. I am passionate about teaching and I want to help students have the positive experience of learning similar to my own.

Tutoring Experience:

I have 3 years of fully qualified teaching experience in prestigious private schools as well as having 5 years of teacher training experience, teaching in DEIS schools and adult education. I have provided grinds one to one and in groups for the past 4 years for LC and JC Home Economics, Biology and Science. I have also been an examiner for the past two years for the State Examination Commission which has been a huge learning experience to understand exactly what examiners are looking for and how the marking scheme works. It has also been invaluable in understanding fully what is expected in the new junior cycle curriculum.

My students have had an excellent track record of H1 grades, with 32% of my students in the previous two years achieving a H1 grade, and 50% achieving a H2.

Approach to Grinds:

I have a student centred approach that focuses on your particular learning style e.g. depending on whether you are a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner. Due to the heavy content of my subject areas I help students focus on trends in exam papers, the skill of how to answer exam questions and to understand what is expected by examiners, learning smarter not harder. I also use memory aids, mind maps and graphic organisers to summerise content. I also supply condensed notes for each topic area. Moreover, I have a positive approach to learning, the aim of grinds is not to add extra pressure but to alleviate it. Its about focusing on areas of strengths and showing these on the day, as well as building on areas we struggle in. We all need that positive reinforcement and self confidence to really help give a boost to strive and achieve our full potential.
