Personal Description:

I have lectured in French at university level and have taught French at all levels, being very familiar with the Junior and Leaving Certificate French syllabus; students of mine to whom I have given grinds (private tuition) in French up to Leaving Cert Higher Level and at university undergraduate and postgraduate levels, have raised their levels of proficiency in French within a short time and have consequently achieved excellent exam results. I am educated in French to PhD level and hold first class honours degrees in French (also Spanish, Marketing and Translation Studies) at Associate, Bachelors and Masters levels. I have spent much time studying, working and holidaying in France over the years. I currently translate professionally from French to English, with specialisms in literary and general translation. I'm a member of the Alliance Française in Dublin, and regularly read the French press and French literature, and listen to French news and other French television and radio programmes daily to keep up my fluency. I have lectured in English for Academic Purposes to French university students at Ecole de Management Normandie (Dublin campus). I hold the DALF (C2) diploma (proficiency) from the French Ministry of Education, in French language proficiency (92 per cent). Being passionate about French and Francophone culture, I read widely in French and listen daily to French radio, as well as continuing to write and speak in French for the purposes of my teaching - I work with French natives - and I continue to translate professionally from French into English. I hold the DALF Proficiency -level diploma in French (C2) with an overall score of 92%.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over twenty years of language teaching experience: I lectured in French at Waterford Institute of Technology for one academic year, to advanced (BA) level; I lectured in French at Inchicore College of Further Education, Dublin for one academic year, and later lectured in French, Spanish, Translation Theory and Research Skills for Modern Languages Undergraduate Students at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) for a further academic year. I have also guest lectured in aspects of Translation Theory and Comparative Literature at Dublin City University. I supervised theses, dissertations and translation projects at BA and MA levels at UCLan. I have also taught English to Speakers of Other Languages at various private language schools in Dublin for the past ten years, and lectured in Academic English at British Study Centres Dublin, to Ecole de Management Normandie (Dublin campus) French university students from September 2018; I also lectured in Academic English at UCD for almost 2 years, up to recently. In addition, I have given grinds in Junior and Leaving Cert French for many years. I was recently offered the post of French Lecturer at South-East Technological University Waterford but have decided to remain in Dublin and to continue teaching French and English here.

Approach to Grinds:

My approach is tailored to the specific needs of each individual student and I always concentrate particularly on the areas of French language and of the French exam paper which the student requests most assistance with. In addition, I use the grinds to ensure that each student gets thorough and repeated, varied practice and drilling in all aspects of the French examination paper, viz. aural, oral, written expression and reading comprehension, thereby enabling students to acquire maximum familiarity with the demands of the exam paper, syllabus and curriculum, with which I am very familiar from years of giving individual, private tuition in French to secondary students. My approach is also personable, friendly and encouraging. I encourage and assist students in achieving their full potential and exam results, plus feedback from students and their parents, have been uniformly excellent over many years of teaching. I also would describe myself as a hard-working, well-prepared and conscientious teacher who takes pride in his teaching and takes his responsibilities to students very seriously at all times. I have a lifelong passion for French language and culture and this shines through in my teaching.
