Personal Description:
Hi, I'm a first year graduate medical student in the University of Limerick, with an undergraduate degree in science (specifically microbiology). I also have a 1st Class Master's degree in journalism, and have spent the last few years as a freelance writer for health, science and lifestyle websites.
Tutoring Experience:
I only have three months official teaching experience, in a volunteer capacity in Nepal, but while there, I taught a variety of ages, from kids aged 7 to teenagers. I also have extensive experience of training adults from time spent as a laboratory analyst in the pharmaceutical industry.
Approach to Grinds:
My opinion on grinds is that students should understand the basics first, giving them a good grounding on which to base a further understanding of the subject. I also think that the Irish educational system has a few characteristics of marking that an older student can exploit to get the best possible result, as well as getting the most out of the subject. For younger children, I think a solid base is more important than studying to an exam.
I also think that breaking up a whole, intimidating subject into bite-sized chunks is a good idea, and that encouragement and praise in appropriate places is extremely helpful in increasing the will to improve.
