Hi! I'm Paul. I have vast teaching experience (see below). I have published several books and numerous journal articles on everything from representations of London's East End in literature to a study of the use of music in The Wicker Man. I have a PhD from the University of Exeter, and a first class English degree (also from Exeter).
I have experience tutoring A level English Literature students. I also have 15 years experience teaching at universities such as Exeter, Plymouth, and Aberystwyth. I have taught a vast range of topics at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including English and American literature, film studies, drama, television and media studies. Last year I tutored a student who ended up going to Oxford University.
My teaching approach is primarily conversational/discursive. I develop bespoke plans for each individual teaching session. During these sessions I ask students a series of carefully considered questions about the texts being studied - usually linked to possible exam questions. I believe in the power of 'active' learning - in enabling the student to develop knowledge through work on the texts. I also share my insights into how the student might answer questions on the texts. For every session I research published critical materials, sharing these with the student. I have advanced close textual analysis skills. I really enjoy sharing these skills with students, and encouraging them to further develop their own skills.
