I studied Physics with Cosmology at London University's Royal Holloway College. Gaining a BSc with Honours.
After education I set up my own manufacturing and design company with my very clever wife. With technology and techniques always changing, I had to self teach and also taught those around me as manufacturing became progressively more automated and technical. I also developed processes and techniques that made our production very efficient
After selling that company I became a self employed architectural Consultant and also professional Photographer.
Now I wish to give some of this experience back.

Tutoring Experience

I have now been tutoring since 2016. I am really proud of: my record: giving students with little confidence the techniques and self belief to get grades they never thought they could achieve. Basically to max the grades their intellect should allow them to get.
My Physics experience is obvious. But Cosmology uses some of the most difficult mathematics in use anywhere. So one has to properly understand the maths, not just know how it's done but how it actually all fits together and how it was developed in the first place.
I still push myself to understand more maths and science then I actually need to teach.
In industry I had to learn for myself as I went along and then guide and educate employees and university students who chose our company to do their work placement year.
I was also responsible for the development and introduction of new technology and equipment into my company. This meant being able to learn quickly and then teach efficiently.
I have also taught photography techniques to novices and hobbyists.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is to teach my students how to learn for themselves, how making mistakes is fine- it's actually how we learn and how to read and take in information effectively. Skills that they will use for the rest of their lives.

My approach to a particular course is to help them understand the maths and science so they have a good chance of solving novel problems that may crop up on exam paper.
Lots of advice on how to revise and how much revision is actually needed.
I give my students techiques on how to deconstruct problems that seems unsolvable.
And how to mop up those extra marks that might be easily gathered with just a little change in approach.

Hopefully these techniques and my approach inspires them to take a deeper interest in their subjects. I certainly try to make the maths and science seem wondrous, because they really are.
