Personal Description:

I am a maths teacher qualified with PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) from Exeter University. I have been teaching in different local schools in Cornwall. I understand that in 2017 GCSE Maths will be a big challenge for everyone. I am very confident that I can help your children to meet this challenge with both English and Chinese methods of approaching maths.

As a native Mandarin speaker I also offer Mandarin tuition at different levels, including GCSE.

Of course, if you need someone to help you to translate English or Mandarin and Mandarin to English on some occasions, please contact me.

Tutoring Experience:

As a teacher, I feel that strong subject knowledge is important. One of the qualities that I bring is an educational background that gives me confidence to teach (both pure and applied maths).
Mathematics is one of the basic fundamental subjects for understanding the world that we live in. Mathematics helps in mental development, accuracy of description and the skill of logical thought. It is the natural properties of maths, its utility and aesthetics, and also my desire to communicate these to a young audience, which motivates me to be a teacher. It is important to me that students enjoy learning and I hope to apply the academic knowledge that I have acquired. I see learning as a lifelong process and continuing development as essential to providing my students with the best learning experience.
In 2013 I undertook a subject knowledge enhancement course at UCP Marjon prior to enrolling on a PGCE. This has extended my knowledge of the mathematics curriculum and how it relates to teaching. I can also draw on different teaching methods (for example traditional approaches or teaching for understanding). Initially, working in an industrial setting, I acquired skills in areas such as negotiation, team work and problem solving which I can transfer to an educational setting.

As a teacher of mathematics, I consider that my subject knowledge is important. I have an education that emphasizes the importance of mathematics and I am willing to apply this to further my teaching practice.

Alongside teaching experience in China I have attended local schools in Cornwall during my teacher training. During this period I was able to demonstrate the necessary strengths to succeed in teaching. I am always willing to try new methods but always prepared to rethink improvements rather than stick to the same teaching resource. As an example, I once presented the topic of ‘factors’ and used an internet resource which the students were highly fascinated with. At the suggestion of the head of the department I incorporated it into a Scheme of Learning.

I believe that to do the job well it is important to me that students enjoy learning and it is always my intention to bring skills and experience to make learning as enjoyable as possible. It is essential to capture the attention and imagination of students by being creative. Additionally, I see learning as a lifelong process and continuing development as essential for both teacher and student. I am fully conversant with IT resources, such as ‘SIMS’, Microsoft Office and ’electronic white boards’.

I feel passionately about delivering the best education possible for each student, although I do not underestimate this task which requires skill and patience - it is important that each student succeeds academically. I have experience of various approaches to teaching although I consider the concept of ‘teaching for understanding’ to be essential. To attain success in the classroom I have found it critically important to maintain discipline, but also to ensure that a good classroom relationship is established… Having had a variety of experiences in education and industry, in both the UK and China, I have developed skills such as an ability to work as part of a team and to problem solve. I have established a highly organised approach to my work, a good example from my previous career being the organization of conferences both in the field of business as well as in teaching.

Aspiration, ambition and achievement are my ‘magic words’.

Tutoring Approach:

I am tutoring a number of students currently at ages ranging from 9 to 18. One-to-one is the most effective way of learning because the learning itself is tailored according to the individual student's needs. A great 'tutor' will shear-up confidence in the most positive way for children.
