Willem

I am Willem, a Marimba soloist, drum kit performer, guitarist, pianist and teacher, and all round percussionist. I was always interested in drumming at a young age. When I was very little I could not stop drumming on pots and pans in the kitchen! I then received a drum kit for Christmas when I was seven years old and started lessons with Bert Schilperoort. I continued with Bert for many years, who was and still is a true inspiration to me. For many years I also gained experience of playing in percussion groups led by Cambridgeshire Music's Mark Aldous. I also studied Tuned Percussion under expert teacher Mark Aldous. I was then taught by Belgium solo percussionist Professor Jessica Ryckewaert. I recently graduated from Leeds College of Music with a first class honours as well as the The Rotary Club of Leeds Cooke-Webster Prize earned from achieving the highest mark (95%) in my end of year recital. I currently work as a music therapist delivering both music lessons and therapeutic opportunities throughout the UK.

I have been teaching individual drum kit, guitar and piano lessons for over 10 years now, delivering accurate and personalised lessons for all of my students.
I have grade 8 in both tuned percussion and drum kit and grade 5 performance in piano.

Tutoring Approach

I strive to create a balanced approach to every lesson where the student has the opportunity to develop their own musical voice with the help of my professional expertise. Throughout each lesson the student enhances their technical and musical skills with the aid of my personal teaching books and the rock school syllabus.
I also enjoy creating jam sessions where I accompany the student on guitar to help them develop their listening skills which I recognise as an effective addition to musical theory and an element missing from modern day music lessons.
