I have been teaching A level and GCSE History in schools and colleges for over 25 years and have been both a head of history and head of sixth form. I have a history degree as well as a PGCE and Mphil in History from the University of Wales, Swansea and am married with three children and one grandson, who will hopefully one day wear the number 10 jersey for Wales! I offer private tutoring to challenge myself beyond my current role in a college as well as expanding my involvement in both education and history. I truly do enjoy working with students on an individual basis and am genuinely proud of their achievements, many who attend schools where some teachers fail to see their potential. I give students the confidence to believe in themselves and consequently overcome their weaknesses in examinations priding myself on having the ability to take students to another level in understanding the expectations of examiners. I also have a wealth of resources for students to access. My love for History inspired me to be a teacher and I retain that desire to want to help others.
In my role as a teacher in schools and colleges I have worked my way through the education system to be a head of history and latterly head of sixth form with over 25 years experience teaching A levels & GCSE history. My own specialist area that I researched for both my initial degree and masters is nineteenth century USA, but I am an expert in USA, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa and India, however, having two degrees in History I am qualified in all areas of the current specifications of all exam boards having successfully taught topics in most areas across different centuries. I also have a comprehensive and unique understanding of all exam board requirements. I have also undertaken extensive professional development over the years and held lead roles in safeguarding, pastoral support and additional needs.
I focus on providing the necessary skills and tools to develop and expand a students understanding of all aspects of historical study, most importantly how to pass exams with high grades. I primarily focus on showing students how to plan and present their work effectively to fulfil the expectations of the exam boards. My approach to tutoring is simple, but effective. I give priority to breaking down the barriers that prevent students achieving. Following a complimentary meeting where I assess the skill levels and understanding of the student, I provide individualised effective strategies to ensure they get what they want and need. Face to face meetings can be supported by substantial e-learning that ensures the student has regular advice and guidance. Work is set to deadlines and marked within 48 hours to provide the very best tuition and of course value for money. There is no limit to the amount of e learning support provided or required and the student can have as many face to face meetings as they feel are necessary in any one month without any extra cost other than previously agreed costs. Resources will be provided including essay writing frames and action plans. Prior to exam periods the contact hours can be increased further if necessary or requested at no extra charge to ensure the student is adequately prepared for the exams. I will ensure that the student is not lacking confidence or skills when sitting their exams.
