Personal Description:

hi,

let me start by saying that whatever your reason for needing a tutor I have probably experienced what you are feeling now. I have been a student faced with deadlines, exams and the struggle to learn new concepts so I sympathise with pupils and the pressures upon them and as a mother I have experienced all the uncertainties and fears we feel when our children are not meeting the required standards or when the school is failing them. I have employed tutors for my own children so I do understand how important it is to choose the right tutor for your needs.

please feel free without any commitment to email me and ask any questions you wish or even to have a sample session to assess whether I am the right person for you. after a first session I always ask parents and children to discuss the session privately before any further commitment is made as a correct fit is essential and you/your child must feel comfortable working with me.

I am friendly and easy to get along with and my first concern is to create a comfortable mood where pupils of any age can relax and feel they can speak freely or ask questions. I tutor because I enjoy it and I make it clear that this is not a classroom lesson as I am there to focus on the needs of the tutee not churn out a lesson by rote.

I apply flexibility to all areas of my tuition and if a lesson is at a critical point I will go over the planned time and not stop in midair when 60 minutes are up.if ideas are flowing rigidity is not helpful! I am happy to discuss things with you before or after a session and will not count that time as part of the session and am happy to check any work or queries you may want to send me between sessions at no extra charge.

knowing what a financial stretch tuition can be I can offer sessions which you can afford as even a monthly session to deal with issues as they arise is helpful to a struggling child so just ask me. I tutor families where two or three children of quite different ages may share the session, depending on the priority on the day and this helps to keep costs down. gcse students may wish to share the cost with a friend and the input can really improve the experience.

some parents employ me initially for one subject but the tutee is welcome to bring any other homework problems to a session and we may work on general learning improvement and several subjects which saves on employing several tutors-this works particularly will at junior level where I cover the whole curriculum.

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored for many years and in many situations, probably it is easier for me to list the areas I have covered so you can see at a glance if I have the experience you need.

I have tutored:
primary age
juniors
up to and including gcse
"A" levels
undergraduates
mature students

my subjects include:
English
history
religious education
literacy
numeracy
essay writing
exam prep
assignment proof reading
undergrad report reading/tweaking
junior school curriculum

I have tutored in diverse situations:
home schooling
local authority pupils
special needs
foreign students
English as a second language
failing students
high fliers
one to one
groups
Skype

if your requirements are not here simply email me to ask.

Tutoring Approach:

my approach is simple-you are paying me and you expect results so I do my best and parents are encouraged to sit in, join in, pop in and out or listen from the next room but obviously the child being tutored will have an input into this as he/she is the important one here-you and I will put their needs first.

my approach is more organic than strictly formal because this is one to one and I will assess, get to know and then plan sessions to suit the learning needs of the individual. if you employ me for literacy/spelling I will incorporate the tutee's interest into the work we do ie music, sport, horseriding etc as we all learn best in a safe and familiar situation. I begin by encouring confidence in what they have achieved as negativity is not a good teacher.

I choose the tools tp suit the individual and their learning style. if a gcse student loathes the poetry they must study then I will teach comparisons etc by playing the songs they enjoy to give them confidence or I may teach Shakespeare by comparison with soaps via a laptop. I see no reason for education to be rigid or boring and may introduce games to ice-break to make sessions easier.

my job is to gently lead tutees to achieve their objectives with patience enthusiasm and creativity and give them confidence and support to state opinions or tell me when I am not doing exactly what is wanted… i want to look forward to end of year reports/exam results knowing we have done our best together.so just contact me and we can discuss your needs and costs.
